Lighting Design and Compositing

MasterClass Project for ILM

This video shows the lighting design and setup created to produce a cinematic and visually pleasing scene, reminiscent of a nostalgic homely atmosphere, where the god ray illuminates the helmet and demonstrates that there is more behind this mcguffin. To make this scene I had to develop the IBL reflection using PTGUI. I also had to create some dummy geometry and project the demo footage onto it. Using nuke, I had to balance colourspaces of all existing footage and all new objects within the scene, making sure all light interaction and colours are balanced and consistent.

Automated Real-Time Filmic Lighting from Film Soundtracks

This project demonstrates the balance between music and lighting within film and how they interact to amplify emotions and narrative techniques. This thesis and project describes a prototype for an automatic light rig that changes based off musical soundtrack input. Each soundtrack determines a filmic genre automatically which then produces a corresponding filmic light rig. This rig is developed and changed in real-time using a variety of variables.
